The Difficult Shu Road - Li Bai

Ai Ya Ya! Dangerous and towering!
The difficulty of the Shu Road is as difficult as ascending the blue sky!
Can Cong and Yu Fu founded the Shu kingdom so long ago!
Since then, forty-eight thousand years have passed,
with the Qin Kingdom there was no contact.
Mount Tai Bai on the west has bird paths and blocks the road to Shu,
only birds can traverse and ascend Emei summit.
When the earth opened and mountains fell five warriors died,
only afterwards were the steps to heaven and hanging stone bridges joined.
The summit above reaches to where Yihe rode his six-dragon cart to block the sun,
the twisting water below crashes and evades.
Even spirit-carrying yellow cranes cannot pass,
monkeys desiring to climb over are left without a place to grasp.
Black Mud Summit winds and winds,
nine turns within one-hundred steps over the layered mountains.
Look to the sky and hold your breath, touch the Shu stars and rise past the Qin constellation,
pat your stomach and let out an long empty sigh.
I asked the traveller from the West when he will go home,
I told him this way’s precipitous crags cannot be climbed.
The only sounds are the wails of birds perched on ancient trees,
the female following the male flying a twisted trajectory through the forest.
I also hear the cuckoo chirping in the moonlight,
sorrow fills the empty mountain.
The difficulty of the Shu Road, is as difficult as ascending the blue sky!
Crimson health drains from faces when they hear this!
Not an inch between the layers of mountains and the sky,
fallen withered pines lean against the precipice.
Rapids and waterfalls rumble,
thunder from the gullies as water meets walls and carries stone away.
This place is so dangerous, I lament those who come from afar, why would you come?
Towering Jiange Pass soars, guarded by one soldier an entire army cannot pass.
If the soldier is not trustworthy, he may turn into a wolf or jackal.
Avoid fierce tigers in the day, evade long snakes in the night,
grinding their fangs and sucking blood, the dead are uncountable, like scattered sesame seeds.
Although Jin City is said to be a safe and pleasant city, it still would be better to hurry home.
The difficulty of the Shu Road, is as difficult as ascending the blue sky!
With a twisted body I gaze west and let out a sigh.
